Robert H Bentham

1821 - 1911

Original signed watercolour, circa 1870.

Switzerland

This is a fine large watercolour by this Victorian landscape artist who flourished in the 1870's exhibiting a number of works at Suffolk Street.  Originating from Guernsey he is known for his pictures of France and Switzerland as well as Preston street views.  He is listed as having also lived at 5 Avenham Place in Preston and there are examples of his work held at the Manchester Art Gallery.

I believe this to be one of his finest works, quite probably an exhibition piece.  The backing board still retains an original label which details the title of the work and the fact that it is the property of a 'Miss Bentham of Southport' which indicates to me that it was a painting held in high regard by the family.

Painting size approx. 19 1/2" x 27 1/2"

Painting is in good original condition with only minor foxing that doesn't draw the eye.
