Erica Rutherford was one of the very first openly transsexual British artists. She received acclaim at home and abroad after a series of solo shows at the Leicester Galleries held between 1961-1964.
This particular work is from her first show in 1961 and bears the original exhibition label verso along with the title of the work and the purchaser name.
Artworks by Rutherford are very rare and this is a particularly scarce example of a very early work still in its original condition having never been removed from its frame.
Rutherford has recently been presented at the highly prestigious Venice Biennale 2024
