Charles William Cain (1893-1962)
Original drypoint etching
'Ferry at Forfar'
Circa 1930
This is a wonderful original etching from the limited edition of just 77 copies, a fine impression.
Cain is a renowned etcher with a reputation as a major Orientalist printmaker. Attended the Camberwell School of Art and subsequently became illustrator and cartoonist for the Johannesburg Star newspaper until WWI when he served in India and Mesopotamia. Studied at the Royal College of Art, 1920-21, under Frank Short. During the 1920s and 30s he produced 74 etchings and engravings, mostly depicting scenes in Iraq, Persia, India and Burma, published in London by Greatorex.
His work is held in the V&A Museum as well as the British Museum.
Although the label verso titles this as 'Going to School, Western Isles' I believe the correct title is 'Ferry at Forfar'
