Anthony Vandyke Copley Fielding
Anthony Vandyke Copley Fielding P.O.W.S. 1787 - 1855
Original signed and dated watercolour
Junction of the Wye and Severn
A marine and landscape painter in watercolours Fielding studied under John Varley and rose to become one of the leading and most fashionable drawing masters of his day, becoming President of the Old Watercolour Society from 1831 until his death.
In 1824 he was awarded a medal at the Paris Salon alongside Constable and Bonington.
This is a typical scene for the artist and many believe that the earlier views which include his Wye drawings are smaller, fresher and more appealing than later works. He toured the Wye valley in 1816 and this painting is, I strongly suspect, from that period.
Fielding was championed by Ruskin who wrote 'No man has ever given, with the same flashing freedom, the race of a running tide under a stiff breeze, nor caught, with the same grace and precision, the curvature of the breaking wave, arrested or accelerated by the wind'
Frame size 15 1/2" x 19 1/2", Painting size approx. 6 3/4" x 10"
